What popular work style frameworks are there?

There are many popular tests assessing human behavior and work style. Here are the most commonly used ones:

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This is a widely used test based on Carl Jung's theory. It categorizes people into 16 personality types based on four categories: Extraversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, and Judging vs. Perceiving. It is popular among hiring managers for staff assessment and for self-discovery.

The DISC assessment. The DISC model is an acronym for Drive, Influence, Support, and Clarity. It focuses on how people act in various contexts and interact with each other, categorizing individuals into one of four styles. DISC theory is a valuable tool for team-building and understanding individual work styles, as it offers insights into how individuals respond to challenges, influence others, prefer pace and consistency, and adhere to rules and procedures.

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Based on Hans Eysenck's trait theory, this assessment measures personality based on three dimensions: Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Psychoticism. In the workplace context, it shows an individual's sociability, emotional stability, and potential for unconventional thinking, giving a more objective picture of a candidate's work style.

Our work style test is similar to these personality assessments, but it is more interactive and fun! Plus, it takes less than three minutes to complete, which makes it suitable for busy professionals. You will receive an accurate assessment of your work style plus personalized recommendations on how to use your strengths most effectively.

6 work style types

Each work style assessment evaluates different character traits to give an accurate description of your personality, communication style, and strengths. Here are the examples of six most common work styles:

Logical (problem-solver)

A logical employee can conduct an in-depth analysis of a problem and identify the solution. They often come to the rescue of the team when things get tense. On the other hand, such a person needs maximum free space and autonomy.

Logical team members aren't super effective during brainstorm sessions and active discussions, and thrive when doing independent research and analysis. They don't deny the importance of teamwork, but tend to be more productive when working solo. They are determine, hard-working, and have a creative vision. On the other hand, their communication skills and planning might need some work.

Detail-oriented (strategist)

Such people see the small elements of tasks and projects and evaluate their impact on the team's work. They notice tiny details that others miss and can evaluate the output of the further work. They excel in strategic thinking and have a precise, focused approach to work. Strategists ensure a structured environment and stability at work and minimize risks of failure for the entire team.

On the flip side, detail-oriented employees often find it difficult to compromise and do not show flexibility in situations where it is important. They are often perfectionists, which may create project delays. Their striving to make things perfect might cause conflicts on a new project and even lead to burnout of such specialists. Plus, they need to cultivate the ability of seeing a bigger picture.

Idea-oriented (doer)

Idea-oriented employees generate global ideas, see the big picture, and come up with innovative solutions that shape the work processes. Moreover, they are often positive and serve as a source of inspiration for others. They don't focus on details and let other team members take care of them. Such people thrive in leadership or creative positions.

The downside of this type is that they find it hard to implement their own ideas and cannot structure the work process. Plus, they can easily overlook small details, so they work best in partnership with detail-oriented coworkers.

Cooperative (integrator)

Cooperative individuals thrive in team interactions. Unlike the logicians, they enjoy working in a team, getting feedback from coworkers, and discussing the project on the go. They prefer to discuss any ideas immediately as they emerge and are less willing to write things down and analyze them. They are great communicators and often form effective teams.

Their energy and initiative make a cooperative employee a perfect team member. However, they aren't as good at making decisions independently. They feel anxiety and stress when working alone, so their sense of independence and responsibility definitely needs improvement.

Supporter (mediator)

Supporters are relationship-building experts. This personality type shapes the team spirit, as they are sociable, responsive, and can motivate others to achieve outstanding results. They often act as mediators during conflicts and excel at connecting all types of personalities in the workplace, including those who work independently and don't feel confident in a team environment.

Their prime superpower is their emotional intelligence. Supportive employees can first notice the tension in the team and resolve the situation. Yet, emotional intelligence sometimes acts as a hindering factor in situations when critical thinking is important. They might evaluate the situation focusing only on emotions and make wrong conclusions. Logical thinking, structured approach, and focus are the main areas for growth for this type.

Proximity working style (adapter)

These professionals value personal interactions above all. They appreciate one-on-one interactions with other team members, and are more effective in the office than remotely. Even when working on tasks independently, they need feedback and a sense of connection with the team. Proximity-driven employees quickly build rapport with coworker and customers.

This type is less effective when communicating digitally. As they rely on instant feedback, they ned environment where others will guide them or provide support on demand, otherwise, their productivity might be hindering.

Each work style has its pros and cons, so your best strategy is to identify your workplace personality and maximize your strengths to reach your full potential. If you find the organization and team suited for your work style, it will positively impact your productivity, sense of well-being, and efficiency. Yet, it all starts with a simple personality test - take our quiz to get actionable insights tailored to your workplace style.

How knowing your work style can benefit your career?

After completing the work style personality assessment, here's how you can leverage the findings:

  • Optimize your workflow. People with different work styles have varying preferences when it comes to the process of work and team interactions. By knowing your style, you'll streamline your workflow, minimize stress, and use optimal ways for team communication to complete tasks quickly and effectively.
  • Improve productivity. Some people are more productive on their own, some bring better results when working in a team, and some want to work on their own but need constant feedback. Knowing your ideal style of work will help you be more productive and achieve goals while maintaining a work-life balance.
  • Fuel career development. Your work style impacts career development as well, as it describes how you approach challenges, work with others, and set goals. By identifying your attitude at work, you can set smarter career goals and find an environment where you'll be motivated for personal development and career growth.
  • Foster a work style-conscious workplace. When everyone in a team understands their work style and follows it, it creates an effective environment for everyone. People in the team can focus on tasks where they excel, which will boost the team productivity. To achieve this, everyone in a team should understand different working styles, value effective communication, and be willing to adapt to individual needs.
